6 Tips On How To Recover From Heat Damage

1. Cut Out All Heat

The first piece of advice is to cut out all heat. Now I know it may seem obvious but actually it’s quite difficult to do if you’re someone who relies on heat daily. If you’re using to straightening or tonging your hair, I know how addictive it can be especially if you’re not use to rocking your natural curly hair, and if your hair is not in a good state. But honestly guys to recover from heat damage you have to give up the thing that’s causing the problem. What I would suggest is finding alternative heatless methods that you could look to achieve the same look. There are loads of heatless methods out there that you can use to achieve defined curls if that’s what you’re looking for. You have finger coils, bantu knots, twist outs and much more. If you’re interested in having straight hair then by a wig. There is no shame is owning a wig, many people do these days and because they are made to look natural these day, you won’t even know its not your hair (unless you buy an extreme wig).

2. Do Protein Treatments

aphogee-2-step-treatmentMy second tip is to use protein treatments. This is an essential part of recovering from heat damage. Now a lot of girls actually experience this, including myself. When you straighten your hair it alters the structure of the hair strand, so sometimes it may not bounce back to its natural curl. So bits may stay straight, some bits may turn wavy, so in order to fix that you need to add protein to your hair so it can bounce back to it’s original curl pattern and its original texture. The way to do that is to use protein treatments and I would recommend using the Aphogee 2 Step Protein Treatment every 6-8 weeks. I’ve tried it before and it works really really well. You can also use DIY protein treatments that you can make at home using egg, mayo, honey and lemon, but since the egg doesn’t penetrate the hair shaft, it may take a little longer to see results.

3. Deep Condition Weekly

My third piece of advice is to use deep conditioners. This is a very important step and I would recommend that you carry out a deep condition on your hair once a week. It adds moisture back into your hair that the heat has taken away so you want to make sure that you don’t miss this step. Hair products are good, but they don’t penetrate the hair shaft deep enough and when you’re trying to bring your hair strand back to its natural state, you need products that will do beneath the surface to work from the inside out. Just coating your hair in products will not change the structure of your hair so you need that deep protein and deep condition. I personally use the shea moisture deep treatment mask and I have also used the motions deep penetrating conditioner. You don’t have to splash your money on shea moisture but I do like it because they use natural ingredients.

4. Train Your Curls

My fourth piece of advice is to train your curls. A lot of people do this if they are transitioning and they have done the big chop, but you don’t have to do the big chop to recover your curls. One method that I would use is the finger coils. Finger coils will help to train your hair to go back curly and take it’s original form.

5. Trim Split Ends/Damaged Hair

My fifth piece of advice is to trim your hair. You definitely want to keep your ends trimmed to ensure that your hair is as healthy as it can be. I know that if you are recovering from heat damage you probably have split ends, so ensure that those are trimmed off. You do not want them to continue splitting up the hair shaft otherwise it’s only going to do more bad than good.

6. Be Patient

My final piece of advice is to be patient. It is going to be a very long road, especially if you have severe heat damage. The best option really is to cut if off but it’s not essential. If that’s not something you want to do and you just want to take time and use techniques to recover the hair that you have then you’re going to have to be patient because it is going to take a while. You’re not going to see results overnight, there’s no quick fix to this, there’s no way to cheat so to put it very bluntly you’re just going to have to put up with crappy hair until you get the results you’re looking for.
